Tentative steps

01 May 2008 by Administrator

Hey all,

Work on MotorStorm: Pacific Rift continues apace, and the press are starting get the information they're after - we've done about 20 Question and Answer sessions now, so you'll know much more about the game soon.

There's a much greater weight of expectation on us this time round, as we at Evo have changed from "those guys who did that little rally game" into "oh yeah, Evolution". Not quite as well known as EA, Ubisoft or the other giants just yet though.

When you're working on a game, you get used to changes that have been made surprisingly quickly. New games take time to take shape, so it's not as if we're playing MotorStorm one day, and the new game springs into life, fully formed, the next. But that's probably how it's going to appear to the greater gaming public.

So I'm actually quite excited about how you lot out there are going to react. Interested? Surprised? Bored? I guess we'll see. But whatever you think, we're going to quietly monitor the feedback, taking note and perhaps making changes accordingly. Genuinely though, we hope you like it.

Cheers

Hal

from the trailer i've seen, you guy are doing an excellent job definately better than the first MS but i'm afraid there is still one problem. The first MS was really difficult and the AI was really agressive. I'd appreciate it if you guy could tone it down a little. My best regards to Evolution team.

Hey guys I have a suggestion. I just heard about this youtube uploading from your playstation 3 that can be implemented in games and guess what. the first game that came to mind was motorstorm. Now this game would be ideal for this type of user generated content. I really missed the no replay function in the first motorstorm and I hope you do something in that direction for your second game. And keep up the good work.

just watched the video of the presentation as Playstation Day - and i can't wait to play the game now. it looks incredible.
this probably isn't the best place to ask questions - is there a forum for the game?
anyway, the start of the trailer shows a glimpse of a suspension bridge to a tiny rock outcrop - do we get to race over that? where can i get a wallpaper of the hawt biker babe from the end of the trailer, posing with her bike? and please tell me that there'll be some more music tracks by Curve on the soundtrack to MS2? the best band in the world - Chinese Burn, or Che or Worst Mistake or Answers or Dog Bone or Cotton Candy or Missing Link or Die Like A Dog would all be perfect on the soundtrack.
or, as smartis88 above suggests, it'd be awesome to finally get a game that would play the music from our hard drives in=game - then i could create a Curve/Pendulum playlist just for Motorstorm :)

Okay first, off, Great game. i cannot wait to see the second one.

and second. I love the use of iWeb. It is good to see Mac people in the game development business.

the part about the:
"those guys who did that little rally game" into "oh yeah"

Its so true! I read an interview in a magazine and thats exactly what i thought when I saw motorstorm 2 on the cover.
As for the AI thought, I thought the AI was perfect and should stay the same.
Cant wait to rip trough the mud using a monster truck!
Good luck on the game and keep up the good work.

Will you guys be implemnting Global servers for the multiplayer portion of this game or will we all be stuck in one particular region like the first motorstorm ?

cleawrence says:

MS2 will kick so much ass but i was wondering i know you can load download vehicles from PSN but can i load vehicles that i hav won from download packs like that badass armoured buggy from devils weekend
thanks!

Angelus says:

Not sure if this is the correct spot for this, but here goes:

I got the Pacific Rift demo, and after playing it dozens of times over the last few days I can say I'm very disappointed with the modifications that have been made to the engine.

Why have the turning mechanics been changed so drastically? They were spot on in the first game, and now they feel horribly off. The rear of the vehicle slides left or right to turn. The jumps are floaty, with no weight to the vehicle. These issues greatly take away from the sense of spot-on control MS1 gave the player. These concerns are popping up all over the web.

I'd like to thank the team for their hard work on the game, but at the same time I hope the control issues will be addressed before the 28th.

i want in this MS to be able to create and customise my own driver because in the first game there were kickass cars with badass paint jobs but sometimes the driver sucked soooooo bad. o yeah and Angelus if you are reading this you are completly WRONG!!!! the new controls are way better and more finely tuned than in the first game. i love the way you can throw punches all the time and in the bigger vehicles you can ram left and right. motorstorm 2 wiil be the best racing game ever in the history of racing games and beyond (except maybe MS3 i am already wondering what it will be like) and that is the biggest compliment i have ever given to ANYONE. you are the best evolution keep up the good work.

Angelus says:

madlad,

Overall, I think Pacific Rift is shaping up great. You mentioned several new additions to the game play, such as the new attack options, that I think are fantastic. However, I feel the truck and the rally car handle poorly in comparison to MS1. Not everyone feels this way, but I hope Evolution takes this into consideration.

i think the truck handles very nicely but i have to aggree with you about the rally car. it handles like a bus! i have to admit i use the attack buttons on the large vehicles to get a sharper turning angle and it really works. if you live in america, Angelus, ignore this but please post your PSN name because i live in great britianand my online name is... well i had better say not but if you post your online name ill send you a friend request. back to MS2, on gamespot.com, in the screenshots area of motrstorm pacific rift, there is a screenshot of a big dumper truck thing and i want your opinion, do you think it is a new big rig or an oversized monster truck? please respond thanks madlad124

can you please answer back to all people who want to know if you're going to make a new wrc for ps3. we are all fed up with your silence .

tigerdraft says:

Pacific Rift is great - no question about it, but I think what stops it becoming the greatest game ever is the rubberband AI. The way I see it, the negatives far outweigh the positives with this. Positives: 1. Beginners wont get left miles behind. 2. There's always lots of vehicles around making the race exciting. Negatives: 1. No matter how fast the player goes there are always the other competitors right behind. Any sense of progression is destroyed, because driving faster doesn't necessarily help. 2. Vehicle choice becomes irrelevant. Because speed is not an issue - what does it matter what vehicle is driven? 3. It's unrealistic - this doesn't happen in the real world. 4. It's incredibly annoying. 5. There is no sense of improving - an essential component of any driving game. 6. There is no reason to keep playing, because you can't really improve. 7. You have to start employing strange tactics like only driving fast on the last lap. 8. Trying to get a fast lap time is pointless. 9. Trying to beat a previous time is pointless.

I really hope I've convinced you that this rubberband AI is a really bad idea. You DONT NEED IT, the game is exciting enough! I know this game is not just about speed, but speed is always an integral element of racing and rubberband AI renders this element obsolete. Why would you want to do that? It's not just my opinion either - take a look on all the forums. It's such a shame you've done this because this game could have been SO utterly incredible. Please don't do it for the third title!
